Fire damage can be very traumatic event. A fire can literally destroy a lifetime of possessions and hard work!

Immediate fire damage cleanup & restoration by On The Spot Cleaning can help you to quickly reduce soot, smoke, and other long term damage and risks in general.  Fire damage cleanup and restoration involves many components. Obviously, we cannot undo the emotional damage and loss that often comes with a serious house fire, but hiring On The Spot will go a long way to restoring your peace of mind.  Often, if handled properly and quickly, many pictures and possessions can be restored. But fire damage cleanup & restoration is more than just restoring the condition of your home. It is about safety. Yes, you can slap on a new coat of paint. Yes you can make the house look nice. But often, with fire damage, serious damage to the structure of the house as well as buildup of char, dust, and other things, if not taken care of properly, can actually be harmful to the health and wellness of occupants.

Here are a few dos and don’ts about fire damage cleanup.

Do:

  • Be aware of structural damage. Roofs and floors may be weakened and need repair.
  • Limit movement in the home to prevent soot particles from being embedded into upholstery and carpet.  Failure to do so makes fire damage cleanup more difficult.
  • Keep hands clean. Soot on hands can further soil upholstery, walls and woodwork.
  • Place dry, colorfast towels or old linens on rugs, upholstery and carpet traffic areas.
  • If electricity is off, empty freezer and refrigerator completely and prop doors open to help prevent mold growth and odor.
  • Wipe soot from chrome on kitchen and bathroom faucets, trim and appliances, then protect these surfaces with a light coating of Vaseline or oil.
  • If heat is off during winter, pour RV antifreeze in sinks, toilet bowls, holding tanks and tubs to avoid freezing pipes and fixtures. (You don’t want your fire damage cleanup to become a water damage cleanup also.)
  • Wash both sides of leaves on house plants.
  • Change HVAC filter; leave system off until a trained professional can check the system.
  • Tape double layers of cheesecloth over air registers to stop particles of soot from getting in or out of the HVAC system.
  • Send garments to the dry cleaner.  Improper cleaning may set smoke odor.

Do not:

  • attempt to wash any walls or painted surfaces without first contacting a professional restoration company.
  • Attempt to shampoo carpet or upholstered furniture without first consulting a professional restoration company.
  • Attempt to clean any electrical appliances (TV sets, radios, etc.) that may have been close to fire, heat or water without first consulting an authorized repair service.
  • Consume any food or beverages that may have been stored close to fire, heat or water.  (They may be contaminated.)
  • Turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet.  Wiring may be wet or damaged and cause electrical shock, and air movement may create secondary damage.
